This large Parrying Malgarr (shield) features Gugra the Possum Cloak Design and is handcrafted in Australia from Australian Red Cedar timber.

Traditionally, malgarr (shields) were used with liyangayil (fighting clubs) for hand-to-hand combat with our enemies. I have replicated the shape of these shields in my artwork.

Walert the Possum feeds at night and sleeps during the day. We use possum skins to make Gugra, or possum skin cloaks, which we wear to keep warm. We decorate the cloaks and wear them in our traditional ceremony.

All designs are based on traditional symbols from South East Australia. Each artefact comes with an information card about Mick Harding the artist, the artefact and its design.
