This medium wide Wall Malgarr (shield) features Waang the Crow Design and is handcrafted in Australia from Australian Red Cedar timber.

Traditionally, malgarr (shields) were used with liyangayil (fighting clubs) for hand-to-hand combat with our enemies. I have replicated the shape of these shields in my artwork.

Waang the Crow is one of the Kulin moieties, the Protector of our waterways and a well-known trickster.

Waang’s once-white feathers turned black because he was burned by a fire. This fire started after he scattered the burning ends of firesticks he had stolen from the Seven Sisters.

He tricked the sisters by telling them that anthills were full of honey ants, their favourite food. But the anthills were really full of snakes. While the sisters were busy fighting off the snakes, Waang grabbed the burning ends of their firesticks so he could cook his yams.

All designs are based on traditional symbols from South East Australia. Each artefact comes with an information card about Mick Harding the artist, the artefact and its design.
