Wall Malgarr Shield with Kwambee Jack Tree Fern Design.

Traditionally malgarr ( shields ) were used with liyangayil
( fighting clubs) for hand to hand combat with our enemies.
I have replicated the shape of these shields in my artwork.

The Kwambee djak or common tree fern was used as a staple food by
our old people during the Warendj (wombat season) or cooler months.
They would harvest the pithy inside of the trunk and this would make up part of their sustenance during this time.  We also eat the inside smaller curls of the new frond in the Poorneet (tadpole season) spring months.  Tree ferns have a nutty taste.

Hand crafted in Australia from Australian Red Cedar timber.
