Handcrafted in Australia from Australian Red Cedar timber, this small malgarr (Aboriginal wall shield) features the Gugra the Possum Cloak design. Its form reflects traditional shields, re-created in an artwork for your wall.
Traditionally, malgarr (shields) were used alongside liyangayil (fighting clubs) in hand-to-hand combat with our enemies. I have replicated the shape of these shields in my artwork.
Walert the Possum feeds at night and sleeps during the day. We use possum skins to make Gugra, or possum skin cloaks, to keep us warm. We decorate these cloaks and wear them in our traditional ceremony.
All designs are created by Mick Harding. They are based on traditional symbols from South East Australia.
Each artefact comes with an information card about the artist, the artefact and its design.
A hanger is attached to the back for easy wall display, as shown in the photo.
Size: Small (WMS).
Dimensions: approximately 375–450mm long × 155mm wide × 20mm deep. As each shield is handmade, measurements are approximate.
